Description :
Reporting to the Vice President of Mechanics and Maintenance, the Director of the Montreal Maintenance Center ensures the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of the Rolling Stock Maintenance team’s operations. This includes routine train maintenance, the upkeep of cars and locomotives, as well as modifications to the rolling stock. The Director is also responsible for the associated work processes, improving the availability and reliability of the equipment, and optimizing the customer experience.

Furthermore, the Director manages risks and costs while applying continuous improvement principles to provide safe and excellent mechanical services, optimizing production efficiency, reducing costs, and achieving service objectives.
The Director will also lead various projects across the organization. They will interact, as needed, with regulatory bodies and internal and external partners. They will ensure the streamlining of internal activities related to assigned projects according to the priorities of the Vice President of Mechanics and Maintenance, such as integrating the fleet renewal program within the Rolling Stock Maintenance service. Therefore, they must act as a strategist, advisor, coordinator, and resource person for the implementation of these projects.

The Director plays a key role within the team, adopting and promoting an organizational culture focused on relationships, teamwork, and the consistent success of VIA Rail.

Responsibilities:

• Supervise the development and implementation of a comprehensive set of integrated plans and programs to achieve the service’s objectives and priorities;
• Write and analyze performance reports to identify key indicators, establish budgets, and make forecasts. Ensure regular monitoring of results and make necessary adjustments;
• Manage equipment, ensuring necessary modifications and repairs are carried out in collaboration with the engineering team, recommend new equipment based on operational needs and costs;
• Provide support, guidance, and direction to the team to achieve objectives and promote continuous improvement, while aligning service efforts with individual work;
• Oversee, mentor, and train supervisors, while evaluating their performance. Ensure compliance with policies and procedures, recognize achievements, assess performance, address performance issues, and resolve associated problems. Encourage a healthy and stimulating work environment;
• Ensure compliance with policies and procedures;
• Evaluate the performance of teams and provide feedback;
• Exercise dynamic leadership by providing effective supervision and continuous coaching, thus fostering a collaborative and stimulating work environment.
Requirements :
• Holder of a university degree in engineering or business administration, or equivalent experience;
• 10 to 15 years of experience in operational management, production, or equipment repair (experience in the railway sector is considered a significant asset);
• A minimum of 10 years of experience in managing employees or multidisciplinary teams in a unionized environment;
• Excellent ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing (English and French); • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

**The position is based in Montreal but involves occasional travel to the Central and Western regions.
